Men's Fashion Faux Pas [Buy]5/10/2013 5:39:33 AM
Men's Fashion Faux Pas We have all made fashion errors now and again, but some fashion mistakes made by men are just unforgivable. If you want to make sure you don't fall into the trap of the most flagrant fashion snafus, use a dash of common sense and follow these five simple rules: ONE: Throw away the novelty neckties. OK, one or two crazy neckties are fine to drag out for family reunions, silly get-togethers, or Halloween. But have some mercy on the rest of us and them out of the boardroom or any other setting where you want to look respectable. The problem with novelties in clothing is that what is funny now, usually isn't humorous for long. TWO: Never, and I mean never, wear socks with sandals. This is a disturbing trend. Please don't participate, this one it's ok to sit out on. Please! Wearing socks with sandals is the quickest way I know of to look goofy. So if you want to look goofy, go ahead. But forewarned is forearmed. Save your sandals for the beach or around the house. Don't take them to the office and never, never wear them with socks. THREE: Always match your socks with your suit. When choosing socks, the basic rule is to consider the suit instead of the shoe-in other words, if you're wearing a navy suit with black shoes, reach for navy socks. And when wearing a light suit, make sure the socks are darker than the suit but a shade or so lighter than the shoes. FOUR: Stay away from in-your-face designer Labels. Do you want to be a walking advertisement? Only if someone is paying you lots of money for a very short period of time. Wearing those bold designer labels may tell others that you paid a lot for your clothes, but they are not typically a sophisticated look. Wearing designer's names does not necessarily equate to stylish. Keep it understated and keep it simple. FIVE: Tailor your suits as needed. Even the best suits need altering. Pants need to be shortened, jackets need to be brought in, sleeves need to be narrowed (yes, you can ask your tailor to slim down your sleeves), and buttons need to be realigned with buttonholes. Most guys' shoulders aren't perfectly even (who knows?!) meaning your jacket often sits on your shoulders slightly askew). Sure, buy your correct size but then have a tailor customize it to your body.

Marilyn Denis travels Full Circle to tell her story [Buy]5/10/2013 5:12:06 AM
Marilyn Denis travels Full Circle to tell her story For many underprivileged children in Mississauga, a summer's worth of memories could last a lifetime. That was the thought behind the fifth annual Full Circle - a fundraiser to raise money for Sponsor a Child Program, which allows children from needy families to enjoy the Mississauga Waterfront Festival. The event, which celebrates accomplishments of women from different walks of life, featured television and radio personality Marilyn Denis, 49, and was held tonight at the Le Treport Convention Centre. "Our goal is to reach $30,000 this evening," said Karen Priest, co-chair of the Waterfront Festival. "A lot of the kids do not have an opportunity to go places. So what we do is create that opportunity for them and their families so that they can go to the festival." Since the event was launched in 1997, more than 20,000 children have been able to enjoy the summer festival. The fundraiser featured a fashion show, dinner, silent auction, raffles and other entertainment. Ron Lenyk, publisher of The Mississauga News, was the emcee for the night. The highlight of the evening was the guest speaker's candid and humorous talk about her personal and professional life. The two-time Gemini Award winner in the Viewers' Choice category said she was leaving her Cityline hosting gig on May 23, after 19 years, because of a recent Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) ruling. She explained the move comes after CTV bought CityTV's parent company, CHUM Ltd., last summer. CRTC rules about competition forced CTV to split CityNews and CP24 into two entities. "Sometimes, if things aren't going well, you need to step back away and let it happen," Denis said. "Something will happen." Denis said she would, however, continue her job as a deejay in the Roger, Rick and Marilyn Show on 104.5 CHUM FM. Denis' observations on her life, especially her single status, had the crowd in stitches. "When you're my age, the herd has thinned," Denis told the crowd. "My son helps me with the shopping because when I shop I pick up things with expired dates - much like the guys I dated." On a more serious note, Denis said she was pleased to be involved with this year's Full Circle and help create happy memories for children. "You never remember the classes you took in school, you may remember an odd teacher, but you'll always remember family vacations," she said. The Mississauga Waterfront Festival runs June 13-15 at Port Credit Memorial Park. Ward 1 councillor Carmen Corbassen donated a personal cheque for more than $500, from her earnings with Enersource, to the festival fund. Corbassen has been imploring Council to approve a $40,000 grant to help the festival carry on.
